“My favorite things to grow are tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and then in the wintertime my favorite plants to grow are broccoli, cabbage and kale,” Chris Williamson said.
Williamson loves growing food for his family — a passion he’s been enjoying for the last 15 years.
“The first thing I did is I put in the greenhouse area,” he said. “It was a real small garden.”
Well, that small garden in his Mesa backyard is now the Webster Willeford Farms named after his great-grandfather.
Williamson is the chairman of the farms.
“We started giving all of our extra produce to cancer patients and then I got my brother involved and we turned his backyard into just like mine,” Williamson said.
It’s a family affair that also includes his wife, kids, mom and volunteers. They harvest the food and pack it up for deliveries.
“We will deliver 14 bundles of 8-ounce packages of greens,” Williamson said. “So Swiss chard and kale or any combination of greens we just harvested.”
Williamson said a lot of the cancer patients they help use the greens for juicing.
They even get a chance to experience bread and jams made by his wife, Jessica.
“We would really love to reach out to every cancer patient who would like to come on board and say we can definitely help you,” Jessica said. “We can give them more care packages and just touching their lives in any positive way that we can.”
Patients are referred to Williamson through word of mouth and Singleton Moms – a group helping single parents battling cancer.
His mom, Camille, has been volunteering with the nonprofit for six years.
“They’re so excited and amazed,” she said. “They can’t believe the outpouring of love that has come through as a result of this terrible thing happening to them.”
Williamson hopes others will join his cause to give cancer patients fresh greens.
Whether you volunteer, give money or donate supplies or land to harvest the food, he believes every little bit can go a long way.
“We want to help as many people as possible,” Williamson said. “I mean, we want to change the world, that’s what we’re after, so get ready, world, we’re going to change you.”
